Tanzanian, Ugandan Leaders Pledge Stronger Cooperation

(MENAFN) A high-stakes diplomatic meeting Saturday yielded major commitments between Samia Suluhu Hassan and Yoweri Museveni, as the Tanzanian and Ugandan heads of state vowed to fast-track cross-border infrastructure and deepen economic integration during the Ugandan leader's official visit.

The centerpiece of discussions focused on accelerating the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP)—a massive 1,539-kilometer conduit linking Uganda's Tilenga Central Processing Facility to Tanzania's Tanga port. Construction teams from China Petroleum Pipeline Engineering Co., Ltd. and other Chinese contractors have pushed the project to 79 percent completion as of January 2026, with mainline welding now finalized. The pipeline is on track for full operational status by July 2026.

Both presidents emphasized strengthening the decades-long partnership between their nations, targeting critical joint ventures in oil, gas, and refined petroleum transportation networks.

Infrastructure modernization topped the bilateral agenda, with Hassan and Museveni agreeing to overhaul cargo systems across Lake Victoria while expanding capabilities at Dar es Salaam and Tanga ports to streamline regional commerce.

The leaders also committed to dismantling trade obstacles by eliminating non-tariff barriers and creating more favorable conditions for investors operating within the East African Community framework.
